How it works
Schroth
At The Bridge, we use the Schroth Method, a conservative approach combining 3D movement, strength training, and breathing exercises to improve posture and reduce scoliotic curves. Treatment length varies based on factors like curve type, severity, age, and personal goals. Leading our scoliosis management team at The Bridge in Millennium Place is physiotherapist Graham Murray, who specializes in scoliosis research, treatment, and exercise prescription.
Scoliosis
Treatments
The Schroth Method’s combination of targeted movement, breathing, and postural re-education empowers individuals with scoliosis to actively participate in managing their condition.
Individualized Exercises
Exercises are tailored to each person’s unique scoliosis curve pattern and severity. By targeting specific imbalances, these exercises aim to reduce curvature, improve alignment, and support better posture.
Breathing Techniques
Rotational breathing focuses on expanding the concave areas of the ribcage, counteracting spinal rotation and enhancing oxygen flow to support muscles. This helps stabilize posture and aids in strengthening.
Posture and Alignment Awareness
Patients learn to recognize and correct asymmetrical postures, training themselves to maintain a more balanced alignment during everyday activities. This body awareness is essential for preventing curve progression.
Progressive Strengthening
Exercises are progressively adapted to strengthen muscles supporting the spine, particularly deep core and back muscles. This provides lasting support, reduces discomfort, and enhances functional movement.

PHYSIOTHERAPIST | SCOLIOSIS SPECIALIST
I initially graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelors of Science, majoring in Biology and minoring in Chemistry. I found myself working in a fast-paced environment as a research chemist for a pharmaceutical company for a number of years but came to the realization that I wanted to help people in a more direct, face-to-face way.
I then returned to the University of Alberta where I completed my Masters in Physical Therapy to pursue this. After graduating, I furthered my education by becoming certified in scoliosis management under the Schroth method of treatment before joining The Bridge team.

Frequently asked
Who is Schroth treatment for?
What are the exercises like?
How long does treatment last?
What should I bring?
Schroth treatment is effective for scoliosis patients of all ages and can be used at any stage—whether you’re wearing a brace, post-surgery, or managing scoliosis without surgical intervention.
Exercises are tailored to each person’s curve pattern, severity, mobility, and function. The focus is on achieving a new sense of posture and alignment using specific positions, repetitions, and breathing. These exercises help reduce flat back and rib prominence while promoting pelvic alignment.
Your Schroth program is personalized based on an initial evaluation. Sessions are typically 30 minutes, with the total number of sessions varying based on individual needs and goals.
Please wear a sports bra or tank top that shows most of your back. New patients should bring their PA and sagittal X-rays, Cobb angles, and Risser stage information to guide the treatment plan and evaluate curve type and progression risk.
